Programs

One-on-one tutoring:  Volunteer literacy tutoring is the heart of ASKT!  ASKT partners with Title I elementary schools throughout the Valley in order to provide students, identified by their teachers as behind their grade level in reading, with additional assistance.  Our students are predominately from low-income homes, and are unlikely to receive this much needed one-on-one reading instruction elsewhere.  ASKT recruits, trains and supports community volunteers who tutor and mentor one student for the duration of the school year.  In the libraries of partner schools around the Valley, groups of approximately 15 tutor and student pairs meet the same day each week for 90 minutes. Each meeting includes an hour of one-on-one tutoring, a healthy snack and drink break, and a literacy related group activity. 

Bright Books: Research studies conducted over the last decade revealed that the most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print.  Unfortunately, 61% of our students have no children's books in their homes before they enter ASKT.  ASKT’s program, Bright Books, enables all of our students to take home one free, new book each month, as well as 10 gently used books from our Family Nights. Through these programs, every All-Star Kid receives a library of 25 new and gently used books.
