Why ASKT?

In 2005, 71% of all Arizona 4th graders tested as below proficient in reading (National Center for Education Statistics).  The National Research Council has found that “academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone’s reading skill at the end of 3rd grade. A person who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time is unlikely to graduate from high school” (1998).  Poor early literacy is also linked to unemployment, poverty, juvenile delinquency, and, eventually adult criminal behavior and incarceration.  In fact, in Arizona, officials have found that they can use the rate of illiteracy to help calculate future prison needs.

Arizona is facing a literacy crisis; All-Star Kids Tutoring is a solution.

All-Star Kids Tutoring's one-on-one volunteer literacy tutoring program has yielded amazing results – a study conducted by the Virginia Piper Trust found that students in ASKT performed markedly better on the Arizona standardized test, AIMS, than similar students who did not participate in the program.  The All-Star Kids Tutoring program is a proven-effective intervention for struggling readers.
