Advanced Training 105: Tutoring Matters I. Tutoring Matters: everything you always wanted to know about how to tutor: The first part of the training will introduce topics from the aforementioned book which is based on the real life experiences of hundreds of tutors, and focuses primarily on the relationship between tutor and tutee. Topics addressed will include: Attitudes, anxieties and expectations; Building relationships; Teaching techniques; Race, gender, class and background differences. II. Phonics Instruction: The second part of the training will cover Phonics Instruction. It will help you to evaluate and instruct consonant and vowel sounds. After this training you will be better equipped to help your student understand phonics rules, recognize phonetic patterns, and put these skills to use.

Advanced Training 106: Instilling All-Star Character
How to teach positive character traits through books! In your role as an All-Star Tutor you have the unique opportunity to dramatically improve your student’s perception of his or her own capabilities. This workshop will show you how to teach positive character traits through literacy activities and books by addressing the following questions: What is Character Education? What does Character Education have to do with Academic Achievement? How can I teach positive character traits while tutoring?

Advanced Training 107:
Reading Aloud!
Presented by Ellen Dean. Ellen is the coordinator of Arizona BookPALS, an all-volunteer literacy program sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, which puts performing artists and trained community volunteers into hi-risk schools to read to classes of children on a weekly basis. Ellen is an expert on reading aloud!
Advanced Training 108: Working with English Language Learners Presented by Peggy Haggerty. Peggy is the English Language Learner Specialist at Madison Heights Elementary, and has degrees in Special Education and Bilingual Multicultural Education. She has taught for 26 years in mainstream classrooms and academic enrichment programs. Peggy will address strategies for improving your student’s skills in English vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension, as well as answer questions you may have. Even if your student is not an English Language Learner, you are guaranteed to benefit from her expertise!

Advanced Training 109: Making the Greatest Impact (by the end of the year!) You’ve read countless books, engaged in numerous activities and taught many new skills to your All-Star Kid. Advanced Training 110:
When Reading Isn't Your Student's Biggest Problem
Presented by Eileen Pasini. Eileen has been an education professional for 30 years. For 15 years, she was a classroom teacher, but has also worked in adult and special education. Currently, she is a counselor in the Laveen School District, working with over 1100 children, from age 4 to 13. Eileen has a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Elementary Education, as well as a Masters in School Counseling.
In this workshop, Eileen will be talking about the many different challenges students face outside of the classroom – from drugs and gangs to divorce and death – that impede their success in school. She will introduce concrete, reading-related activities that you can use to help your student deal with their sometimes chaotic and uncertain world.

Awesome Activities This training will focus on activities you can use during and after reading books to address your student’s particular needs. We’ll talk about how to help your student develop different decoding strategies through semantics, phonics, syntax, and use of sight words. We’ll also review how to model good reading and comprehension skills, as well as new ways of reading together with your student (echo reading, choral reading, etc.)

Advanced Training 201: Motivating Your Student to Write! Writing woes? ASKT will be holding an advanced training on teaching effective methods to get your student to write. Writing is an important skill for all students to develop. Writing will help with your student’s comprehension, spelling and reading ability. During this training, ASKT staff will show you a variety of writing activities that you can easily use in your one-on-one time with your student, we will also offer some tips and suggestions on how to get your student writing!

Advanced Training 202:
English Language Learners
Last year, 45% of all ASKT students were ELLs, or English Language Learners, who speak a language other than English at home. These students face extra hurdles when learning how to read in English. This training will equip you with the tools to help your student become a reader; the tips and activities you’ll receive will be useful even if your child is not ELL.
