Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when would I tutor?

ASKT works to make your volunteer experience as convenient and rewarding as possible. You choose the site where you will tutor depending on schedule, location and the need at each particular site.

ASKT has tutoring sites Monday through Thursday afternoons and evenings throughout the Valley. Weekly tutoring sessions are held in public schools, churches, and libraries that generously donate the use of these facilities to ASKT. For times and locations, see
    this list.

How will I be trained and supported?

While many volunteers come to ASKT with a wealth of experience in education, most of our volunteers have little to no experience with teaching reading.  It's ASKT's aim to help every volunteer become a successful reading tutor, and we do that through on-going training and support.

Initially, you will attend a two hour training session where you will learn the necessary skills and strategies to effectively tutor and mentor a child.

After you begin working with your student, you'll be in regular contact with ASKT and school staff, who will assist you in your work.  You'll be able to attend monthly workshops and advanced trainings on a wide variety of topics that will strengthen your skills.  You'll also have access to a number of resources through this website.

    Who should be a tutor?

Many of our volunteers are education professionals, or have extensive experience working with children; however, we've found that volunteers without any experience can become excellent tutors as well.  The things that all of our successful volunteers have in common are that they are caring, committed and consistent.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, or over 12 if volunteering alongside a parent.

Tutors must be able to commit to attending most tutoring sessions.  If you're interested in volunteering with ASKT, but can't make a weekly commitment, consider being  a substitute tutor.

What happens in a tutoring session?

Here is an example of a typical 6:00-7:30 p.m. session:

6:00-6:05: Start. Sign in, get materials and select  books.  Visit with your student before starting.
6:05-6:50: One-on-one tutoring. You and your student sit down and work together on activities including sharing new literature, reading familiar stories, writing together, developing vocabulary, and recording your accomplishments.
    6:50-7:00: Snack and Drink Break.
    7:00-7:30: Group  activity.
All tutors and students come together for a group activity that will reinforce student reading skills and increase their confidence.  Activities include writing as a group, performing reader's theater, playing rhyming bingo, and much more!

    How do I get started?

Getting involved in ASKT is easy. First, fill out an application and send it in, either by mail, email (jennifer.lee@askt.org) or fax, and RSVP for an initial training date.  Then, we'll begin your background check, including reference checks and fingerprinting. We'll match you with a student as soon as you complete a 2 hour training session where you will learn the necessary skills and strategies to effectively tutor.
