How am I trained and supported?
While many volunteers come to ASKT with a wealth of experience in education, most of our volunteers have little to no experience with teaching reading. It's ASKT's aim to help every volunteer become a successful reading tutor, and we do that through on-going training and support.
Initially, you will attend a two hour training session where you will learn the necessary skills and strategies to effectively tutor and mentor a child.
After you begin working with your student, you'll be in regular contact with ASKT and school staff, who will assist you in your work. You'll be able to attend monthly workshops and advanced trainings on a wide variety of topics that will strengthen your skills. You'll also have access to a number of resources through this website. |
